Lazy Dollar Quarter horses. "Ride a brand known and Respected by the Great Butch Cassidy"

We are a 7th Generation cattle ranching Family. We still live and work on the land as a family side by side. The brand on Lazy Dollar Quarter Horses has a rich and long lasting history that dates back to the settling of the Great American West. Our 4th Great Grandpa and 6 of his friends left their families and migrated to the United States from England when they turned 19 years old. They were bold, brave, and eager for adventure. They could not wait to settle in the American West. Our grandpa and his best friend put on exhibition boxing duels while sailing on the ship in order to earn better food for their friends while they sailed to their dream of the United States. Between the 7 of these boys, they owned only the clothes they each wore,1 Gun and 1 horn of powder shared between them all. All but grandpa and his best friend died while walking across the plains between Council Bluffs, IA and the Utah territory. My Grandpa settled what is now the beautiful red rock Country of Echo Canyon on the Border of Utah and Wyoming. His family first registered the Lazy Dollar brand for their livestock there. One night Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch Gang stole several herds of cattle from the valley including many of grandpas. His son, my 3rd great grandpa, tracked the rustlers south entirely alone for several hundred miles. He was suddenly surrounded and held at gunpoint by some of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch Gang. One of the rustlers told grandpa that he would spare his life and cut out his family's cows if he could get his horse that had fallen off a ledge earlier that day. For the next couple days Grandpa lowered himself on a rope down to the horse, chiseled a ledge in the rock face, built a log platform, and then coaxed the horse to turn and climb back up. During the time he worked the outlaws left with the herd heading further south. He caught them again on the banks of the Green River. The river's edges had iced the night before and the rustlers were delayed trying to get the cows to cross. When Grandpa rode back up, the outlaw who had made the agreement quickly took the horse and pulled his gun to kill Grandpa. However, Butch Cassidy had rode back into the stolen cattle drive with the cowboys on this day and stopped him before he shot Grandpa. Butch stated that "word was bond" and demanded that his gang honor what they had promised days earlier. All of Grandpa's cows were to be cut out of the stolen herd and his life spared. Butch was so impressed with Grandpa's determination to chase down his band of rustlers, free a horse from a cliff face, chase down the rustlers a second time, and do all this while he was only a 16 year old boy!

Butch gave my grandpa his fathers cows back, a gun, the horse he got off the ledge, and a lifetime of friendship. From that day on Butch ordered that no more livestock wearing Grandpa's brand were ever to be rustled again. This set them on a path of trust and friendship. In time the Wild Bunch Gang was welcomed to grandpa's ranch and grandpa allowed them to use his fresh horses when they were running from the law. Journal entries share that oftentimes they would find lathered horses standing in the corral early in the morning with their ranch horses missing. But grandpa always knew his lazy dollar branded horses would be returned or replaced by his friend and ally Butch Cassidy. This brand has been handed down from generation to generation and we are grateful and humbled to be raising our kids 7 generations later still punchin cows on the land and riding horses wearing Grandpa's special and revered brand. Purchasing a horse from Lazy Dollar Quarter Horses allows you to ride a brand respected and rode by the World Famous Western Outlaw Butch Cassidy himself.
